SOLUTION · UNMANNED PARKING

Unmanned Paid Parking System

A car park that runs without booth staff: plate recognition at entry, self-service payment at a kiosk or exit terminal, automatic barrier after payment.

Direct answer: An unmanned parking system reads the plate at entry and starts the duration counter, lets the driver pay the exit fee themselves at a kiosk or exit terminal, and opens the barrier automatically when the exit camera recognizes the plate — so no permanent booth staff is required. Unattended, ticketless and cardless parking all describe the same solution.

How does an unmanned car park work?

  1. The vehicle is read by the LPR camera at entry, photographed, and the parking time starts.
  2. Before leaving, the driver enters their plate on the kiosk or exit terminal.
  3. The screen shows entry time, duration, vehicle details and the amount due; any previous debt and extra services are listed separately.
  4. Payment is taken by contactless credit/debit card and a receipt is printed; cash is collected at the booth or on the attendant's handheld terminal.
  5. As soon as payment ends, an exit grant is created; when the exit camera reads the plate the barrier opens by itself.
  6. The exit period is counted down on screen; if it is exceeded, only the difference is charged.

Features that make unattended operation possible

Fee lookup by plate

The driver enters only the plate; the fee is calculated on the server from the defined tariff, never on the device.

Automatic exit after payment

A paid vehicle receives an exit grant, and the barrier opens when its plate is read at the exit.

Works during outages

The exit grant is also kept on site, so a paid vehicle can leave even if the internet or server is down.

Exit countdown

The exit period granted after payment is shown on screen; if exceeded, only the difference is charged.

Subscribers and free exits

Subscriber vehicles and zero-amount passages leave directly, with no payment step.

Subscription renewal at the kiosk

Monthly paid subscribers can renew at the kiosk without going to a booth.

Debt for non-payers

A vehicle leaving without paying is recorded as debt and charged on its next visit.

Remote monitoring and emergency opening

Everything is monitored from the cloud; one button opens all gates in an emergency.

Which car parks can run unattended?

Facilities with steady visitor traffic — shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, business centres, bus terminals and city car parks — suit the unmanned model. We look at three things when deciding: the number of entry and exit lanes, the share of customers who want to pay cash, and the queue at peak hours. Where cash demand is high we recommend a semi-unmanned setup with the booth open at peak hours. For the complete field solution see our paid parking LPR system page.

Semi-unmanned (hybrid) model

Most facilities do not switch to unattended operation in one step. The booth stays open at peak hours while only the kiosk and the exit terminal work in the evening and at night. The software supports both at the same time: collections are reported per channel — booth, kiosk or exit terminal — and cash shifts are kept only on staffed channels.

Control and security without staff

  • Every passage is recorded with a photo; entry and exit photos are stored with the payment record.
  • Every kiosk and exit terminal transaction, including failed attempts, appears on a live monitoring screen.
  • Barrier openings made from the panel are logged with their reason and reported separately.
  • A blacklisted vehicle raises an on-screen alarm; in an emergency one button opens all gates.
  • Revenue is tracked daily, split into cash, card and kiosk collections.

Ticketless and cardless parking

In an unattended setup no entry ticket is printed and no subscriber card is issued: the vehicle is identified by its plate. Ticket machine and card costs, lost ticket disputes and card handover disappear. Unattended, ticketless and cardless parking all describe this way of working.

Staff cost and payback

The comparison is never a single line item. On one side there are cashier wages per shift, cash counting and cash transport; on the other, the kiosk or exit terminal investment, cameras, barriers and annual maintenance. Payback depends on daily vehicle count, average fee, number of shifts and how much revenue is currently leaking. We work these out together during the site survey; see our pricing guide for the cost items.

24/7 operation and roadmap

The system runs through nights, weekends and holidays; the kiosk and exit terminal restart themselves and errors are logged centrally. On the payment side, contactless credit/debit cards are used at the kiosk and the exit terminal, and cash at the booth and on handheld terminals; QR code payment will be added once the device manufacturer's development kit is complete. HGS toll tags are used for passage tracking today, not for fee collection.

Frequently asked questions

How is the fee collected in an unmanned car park?

Before leaving, the driver enters their plate on the kiosk or exit terminal; the system calculates the amount from the parking duration, payment is taken by contactless credit or debit card and a receipt is printed.

How does a paid vehicle get out?

As soon as payment is completed, an exit grant is created for the vehicle. When the exit camera reads the plate, the barrier opens by itself — no attendant and no ticket scanning.

Does the car park stop if the internet goes down?

No. The exit grant is also held on the site PC, so vehicles that have paid keep passing during an outage; records are completed in the cloud once the connection returns.

What happens if someone tries to leave without paying?

The barrier stays closed. A debt can be recorded for the vehicle; the next time the same plate arrives, the previous debt appears on screen and is collected together. A debt limit per plate can be set.

What about customers who want to pay cash?

Cash is collected at the booth or on the attendant's handheld terminal, so where cash demand is high we run a semi-unmanned setup with the booth open at peak hours. Both channels are reported in the same software.

What do ticketless and cardless parking mean?

The vehicle is identified by its plate, so no entry ticket is printed and no subscriber card is issued. Lost ticket handling, card costs and ticket machine maintenance disappear.
