BARRIER TECHNICAL GUIDE

How Many Seconds Does a Barrier Take to Open?

Opening time is a selection criterion that directly affects queuing at sites with high transit density.

Direct answer: For standard boom barriers, opening time is usually 2-6 seconds; models built as fast barriers can bring this down to 1-1.5 seconds. Opening speed depends on motor power, arm length, and the mechanism's balance/spring adjustment.

What determines opening time?

The torque produced by the motor, the length and weight of the arm, and the spring balance in the mechanism together determine opening speed. Of two barriers with the same motor power, the one with a shorter, lighter arm generally opens faster; that's why models labeled "fast barrier" are specifically built with a short/light arm combined with a powerful motor.

When is a fast barrier needed?

At points with thousands of vehicle transits per day — paid parking facilities, malls, and public-transit terminals — the 1-2 second difference spent per vehicle adds up to a significant queuing difference overall. At these sites, fast-barrier models with a high daily cycle capacity (for example, 5,000 open-close cycles per day) are preferred.

When is a standard barrier sufficient?

At low-to-medium-density entrances such as residential sites, villas, or small businesses, vehicle traffic is infrequent, so a standard 3-6 second opening time doesn't negatively affect user experience and is a more economical choice. The right model is chosen by balancing site density against budget.

Frequently asked questions

How many seconds does a barrier take to open?

Standard barriers take 2-6 seconds; fast-barrier models can bring this down to 1-1.5 seconds.

What's the difference between a fast barrier and a standard barrier?

Fast barriers open in less time thanks to a reinforced motor and optimized mechanism, and have a high daily cycle capacity.
